Managing International SAP HCM Projects

International Rollout of SAP HCM is high on the agenda more and more often for large as well as medium sized organisations. However, all too often these projects drag on for ages, are far more expensive than expected, and even after the project is finished they usually fail to deliver the business results as effectively and fast as required. Many reasons are quoted for these issues, most notably:

  • Political manoeuvring
  • Unreliable staff in foreign subsidiaries
  • Lack of top management support
  • Lack of understanding for state of the art HR processes and the SAP systems

However, looking more closely, the real underlying reasons are more likely to be:

  • Lack of communication or poor communication
  • Different or misunderstood expectations
  • Insecurity and anxiety
  • Language problems
  • No appreciation of the contribution of local teams to project success
  • Lack of open mindedness for different ways of doing things and cultural differences (a lot of lip services are paid to this aspect, but behaviour and mindsets tell a different story)
  • inadequate project management techniques, not accommodating the complexity of international projects
