HCM Insights Podcast: The Challenge of Big Changes to Live SAP HCM Systems
Highly relevant to the topic of international SAP HCM roll out, this will be the subject of a presentation from iProCon at the HR2013 Europe conference in Amsterdam: Thursday 13. June, 13:15 – 14:30: „Proven change management strategies to ensure a successful transition to a global SAP ERP HCM platform“.

The international SAP HCM Insights Team, including the director of iProCon UK, published a new Podcast session. The experts discuss the challenges customers are facing, when they need to make massive changes to existing systems comprising amongst other topics

  • Underestimated complexity
  • Standardisation
  • Change challenges for newly integrated units, but also for central HR and IT
  • Testing

Typical examples for this kind of projects can be international rollouts, consolidation of multiple systems or ESS/MSS rollouts, where corporate culture, national culture, and vested interests add quite a bit to the technology and process challenge. The 38 min Podcast session is available on iTunes.

Personnel Cost Planning and Simulation: Planning Run Error

Many users are not aware of this issue, although it’s been around for some time. Deriving a dependant cost item from a direct cost item in an earlier period doesn’t work, if the cost object (e.g. employee) has changed its org unit since that period. This is due to the fundamental design of the planning run, which is running per org unit rather than per employee / cost object. Therefore, you can’t deal with this issue in the planning run BAdI. For most cases, the problem can be dealt with creating dummy cost items in the data collection BAdI. (Read more)

If the SAP HCM Authorisation Concept Becomes a Straightjacket…

Standard Authorisations in SAP HCM offer quite a few options with ‘normal’ authorisation objects, as well as structural, and context sensitive authorisations. However, with SAP HCM ever more widely used across the organisation covering ever more processes, most customers get to a point, where they feel they need to add some custom coding to make the system fit their requirements. In many cases, custom coding can also reduce the number of roles and profiles required considerably by making them more dynamic. This reduces the workload for administrators as well as the risk of errors – click to read more.

Achieving and tracking business benefits with your SAP HCM project

During the last 17 years, I’ve seen my fair share of SAP HR projects. Large and small, private and public sector, implementations, roll-outs, optimisations, … you name it. There is one thing, most of them had in common: project owners struggle to demonstrate how the project contributes to the success of the business. And this is no different for any other HRIS project (even though some vendors like Workday pretend to have found the holy grail) because the reason for this problem is completely unrelated to the technology used. To be very clear: I’m not saying these projects don’t add value. Quite often they do, but find it difficult to prove. I found that a lack of clarity about objectives is where the trouble tends to start…

Hidden Absence Reporting incl. Bradford Score

Two reports probably useful to HR professionals in any country are hidden away in the menu for British payroll. They aim at analysing absenteeism and can be used globally – provided approval from data privacy officers and workforce representatives are obtained, where this is required. Intended for the UK, the reports miss some texts, if the user is not logged on in English.

How to combine multiple portal roles in one menu item

In the portal, several portal roles can be combined in one menu item to provide different types of employees different links under the same menu item. For this purpose multiple roles can be merged. This is particularly interesting when the menu is determined by the portal role and not by the homepage framework. (Find Out More.)

New Infotype 3346 for UK can create Dump in Payroll and PA

With the February 2013 support package SAP provided the new infotype 3346 for the UK to record the sexual orientation of an employee. This information may be required to comply with the 2010 Equality act. Unsuspecting UK customers experienced problems in payroll and HR master data amongst other processes after implementing the support package. Read here how to avoid payroll dumps, as your system may only be exposed to this update with the synchronisation package in this month.
